When Is Your Baby Ready For Solid Foods?

When he or she:

  • Can sit up with support.
  • Can hold his or her head up, without support.
  • Is approx. 4 mos. old, and no longer satisfied with breast milk or formula.


    What Food Should You Feed?

  • Breast milk or formula should still provide most of your baby's nutrition.
  • For your baby's first meal, try a single grain cereal, like rice.
  • Then follow with, single ingredient fruits and vegetables. Try one at a time for about 4 days to detect any allergies.
  • Next, try high protein meats.

    **Note: The above mentioned foods should all be 'first stage' baby foods.

    How Much Food Should You Feed?

    2 or 3 weeks after starting solids:

  • 24-35 oz., 5-7 feedings breast milk or formula, with or between meals.
  • Breakfast: 1/4 cup of cereal and 1/2 jar of fruit.
  • Lunch: 1/2 jar meat, 1/2 jar vegetable.
  • Dinner: 1/4 cup of cereal.
