When Is Your Baby Ready For Solid Foods?
When he or she:
Can sit up with support.
Can hold his or her head up, without support.
Is approx. 4 mos. old, and no longer satisfied with breast milk or formula.
What Food Should You Feed?
Breast milk or formula should still provide most of your baby's nutrition.
For your baby's first meal, try a single grain cereal, like rice.
Then follow with, single ingredient fruits and vegetables. Try one at a time for about 4 days to detect any allergies.
Next, try high protein meats.
**Note: The above mentioned foods should all be 'first stage' baby foods.
How Much Food Should You Feed?
2 or 3 weeks after starting solids:
24-35 oz., 5-7 feedings breast milk or formula, with or between meals.
Breakfast: 1/4 cup of cereal and 1/2 jar of fruit.
Lunch: 1/2 jar meat, 1/2 jar vegetable.
Dinner: 1/4 cup of cereal.
